Kalamazoo ♥ Google!

But does Google ♥ Kalamazoo? We sure hope so.

A ragtag group of Kalamazoo, Portage, Oshtemo and Kalamazoo Township residents is hoping to woo, court and maybe snag a date with the search giant in the hopes of luring a heaping helping of fiber to our town.

"Fiber?" you ask. "Yes, fiber," we reply. But not the kind you'd find in your breakfast cereal.

In techie circles, fiber is more immediately recognized as a material that allows information to be transmitted at super-fast speeds. Google owns a lot of fiber and it must be burning a hole in its pockets 'cause the company's dying to bury some of this stuff in somebody's backyard.

The practical upshot of this is that whomsoever is deemed worthy of Google's fiber touch will have the ability to surf the web at about 100 to 200-times faster than they do now.

Just think! Instead of waiting 10 minutes to watch that low-res video of your neighbor's cat doing somersaults, you could be rockin' the fast lane, downloading hours worth of LOLcats in mere seconds!

If that isn't enough to whet your web appetite (wepitite?), then just think of the wealth of opportunities that come with 1-gigabit-per-second connections:
  • Hospitals could stream 3-D medical images over the net to doctors in other offices;
  • Colleges could hold live, virtual classes with interactive video feeds;
  • Business owners could connect with clients on the other side of the world to share ideas and hash out plans.

Of course, such a high-speed network would also bring with it the possibility of huge economic and social rewards.

So, convinced? Wanna come aboard? Head your web browser to Kalamazoogle.com for more information on what you can do to bring Google to Kalamazoo.
